Northland, New Zealand

No visit to New Zealand is complete without a visit to the beautiful Northland region, also known as the Birthplace of the Nation. The area is rich in culture and history and blessed with a pristine natural environment and extensive unspoiled coastline. The Kauri Museum is just one of the exciting Northland attractions available during your North Island trip.

Travel all the way up the northernmost point of New Zealand, via Ninety Mile Beach to Cape Rienga. You’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of the Tasman Sea colliding with the Pacific Ocean.

On the east coast, just a few hours from Cape Rienga, it is believed that the Polynesian explorer Kupe made the first landfall on the shores of the Hokianga Harbour during the 11th century. People of many Northland tribes trace their ancestry back to Kupe.

The 18th century saw the arrival of European migrants from England, France, Scotland, Dalmatia (now Croatia), Ireland and Wales. The migrants established missions here, finding work in the kauri industry and agriculture; further enriching the region’s colourful past. The Kauri Museum is the perfect place to discover the pioneer culture, with a day spent at our Northland heritage museum.

Subtropical Northland offers visitors an amazing contrast between the popular and relatively sophisticated east coast and the soulful simplicity of the west coast. Follow the Twin Coast Discovery Highway, a circular touring route, which gives you the opportunity to see stunning Northland in all its glory. You’ll find plenty of amazing sights to see and things to do in Northland.

Along the way, there are Heritage Trails, Wine Trails, Art Trails and Golf Trails. The Twin Coast Discovery Highway links with all other touring routes in the region, meaning tourists can use the Twin Coast Discovery Highway as the basis for their own, tailor-made trail.
